Thamar Klein has a PhD in social and cultural anthropology from the University of Cologne and focuses inter alia on Medical Anthropology and Queer Theories. Ze is research partner of the Working Group Medical Diversity at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Department of Socio-Cultural Diversity in Goettingen. Currently ze serves as a member of the Advisory Board for TvT: Transrespect Versus Transphobia Worldwide, as a member of the Editor’s Advisory Board for Liminalis: Journal for Sex/Gender Emancipation and Resistance, and is the chair of the Working Group Medical Anthropology, a subsection of the German Anthropological Association.

Between 2000 and 2006, ze conducted research on medical pluralism as well as glocalisation and transformation processes within the medical landscapes of Benin (West Africa). The main focus was placed on social interaction systems, decision-making processes of individuals and groups as well as the change of classification systems.

From 2006 to 2009, ze worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle/Saale and is since January 2009 research associate at the Somatechnics Research Centre, Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia (now Somatechnics research associate at the Institute for LGBT studies, University of Arizona, United States). Hir postdoc projects examine how global circulating ideas, policies and technologies affect South African transgender identities as well as the classification systems of sex and gender.

From January 2010 to December 2011, ze headed the project ‘Peer Review at the German Research Foundation. Researching into Expert Panels: the example of Collaborative Research Centers’ at the Institute for Research Information and Quality Assurance (iFQ ), Bonn / Berlin.
