PD Dr. Brigit Obrist (Brigit.obrist@unibas.ch)
Ethnologisches Seminar der Universität Basel

This course concentrates on medical anthropology, with a particular focus on Africa. It provides an introduction to and overview of local experience of health and illness which is shaped by and shapes social practice. The main part of the course deals with key concepts, e.g. illness vs. disease, health care systems, medical pluralism, health seeking, therapy management and embodiment, and reviews anthropological contributions to research in the interdisciplinary fields of urban health, mental health, women’s health and international health. It examines classic and recent studies based on ethnographic field research and critically reviews their implications for theory and application. (Spezielle Ethnologie, Grundstudium)
